What are QR Codes?

Posted: 3rd July 2012

IML Design QR Code Have you seen these things around in magazines or on bus shelter advertising?

They are called QR Codes (quick response codes) and are a bit like bar codes. When you scan or read them using a smartphone, you get automatically taken to a website or a special landing page or to a particular product page.. there are many possibilities for your business.

Anyone can create a QR Code by going to one of the many QR Code generating sites (google "QR Codes" or take a look at http://qrcode.kaywa.com/ or http://www.qrstuff.com/). You just need to decide where you want to direct people to... a webpage, a phone number, even create a vcard (contact record) automatically!

You could put them on:

  • your business card directing people straight to your website or to create a contact record automatically;
  • put them on your brochures directing people to a page all about that particular product;
  • put them in your shop window directing people to your online shop for when you are closed;
  • put them on your product labels and direct people to your newsletter sign up page;
  • put them on promotional items and direct them to your facebook page
  • ...the opportunities are endless!

Below the Tag Heuer advert is from a magazine and the Canon one is at the point of sale in a shop. Let your customers find out more about your products!

To read one you need a QRCode scanner or reader on your phone. I downloaded the free QRReader from the App Store for my iPhone and I just click on the app and then point my camera at the QR Code... it scans the QR Code and takes me wherever the code is set up to take me. Other smart phones have similar apps available.

Try it on the IML Design QR Code above... it will take you to the home page of our website.

If you want to discuss the possibilities for QR Codes in your business, give us a call.
